Pizza Hut is an American fast food chain and an international franchise offering Italian-American cuisine, including pizzas of various varieties along with pasta, sides and desserts. The first pizzeria opened its doors for business in Wichita, Kansas at the hands of Carney brothers Frank and Dan Carney as Dan Frank began catering it as well as Dan Frank II. By January 2020 there had been over 18,700 locations (as per Richtopia ranking) making Pizza Hut 24th amongst 200 brands having significant impact. Today it forms part of Yum! Brands Inc.
In 1958, two students brothers at Wichita State University decided to open an Italian pizza shop. Within six months they opened an additional location; by 1959 there were nine locations under Dan Frank and Frank’s fast-food franchise model. Later (in 1963), architect George Lindstrom of Chicago created their iconic building design; construction on it concluded in 1969.
In 1977 Pizza Hut was acquired by PepsiCo, but within 20 years was sold back outright and merged into Tricon Global Restaurants, Inc. However a few years later its name changed again to Yum! Brands.
