As far as the early 1960s, the German Master Printers’ Association asked for a new typeface to be created and to be identical on the Linotype and the Monotype in order to match text and technical composition. Walter Cunz at Stempel countered by asking Jan Tschichold to create a new model of Claude Garamond’s non-aggressive and essentially classical Roman typeface.
It is bold, and most especially, the italic styles are constrained by the Linotype casting machines, where the width of the characters of a particular letter has to be consistent with the width of characters of other styles and hence the narrow f of the italic style The family is named after Jacques Sabon, who brought Garamond’s Romans to Frankfurt.
Sabon has been traditionally used as the typeface for book text because of its creamy appearance and, to a great extent, because the book typography by Tschichold remains world-renowned.
