Lalezar is an Arabic and Latin display typeface for popular culture, designed by Ahmad Lalezian, an Iranian graphic designer. In the 1960s and 1970s a style of film production was established in Iran that was referred to as Film-Farsi. The prominent aspects of the movies made in this period lay in the productions like romantic dramas, musicals, and unrealistic heroic figures.
The movie posters that were created to embody these films were also expected to amplify these aspects through provocative aesthetics and a kind of display typography. These versatile and powerful letterforms were so popular and versatile that potentially one could claim that they were the most defining element of film posters of that time.
With Lalezar, an effort has been made to reintroduce these aspects of this kind of lettering and bring them into a contemporary Arabic display typeface and a compatible Latin counterpart. While the main inspiration is derived from a form of lettering used to write Persian, the aim here is to develop a typeface that can be used for most of the languages that employ the Arabic script for writing.
