Cormorant is a free display type family designed by Christian Thalmann. At the moment of writing this paper, the project has 45 fonts in total with 9 visual classes (Roman, Italic, Infant, Infant Italic, Garamond, Garamond Italic, Upright Cursive, Small Caps, and Unicase) and 5 weights (Light, Regular, Medium, Semi-Bold, and Bold). Cormorant was designed and typeset by Christian Thalmann of Catharsis fonts and it was coded, interpolated and produced by him. For more images and information about the family, you can visit the following Bēhance page.
Although this project was created as the tribute to the immortal font designs of Claude Garamont, Christian did not take any font as the reference point and basis for creating the new designs. About 90% of the glyphs were drawn from scratch; however, there were times when he wanted to know how to draw a certain character, and so he typed Garamond and then scrolled through the results to get a feel of what Garamond was all about.
He is thankful to creative minds of Typophile, TypeDrawers, and Typografie forums, and Github, for the vast knowledge they have about the type design and for giving substantial feedback on Cormorant while it was in development. He also thanks the hardworking folks at Glyphs, especially Rainer Erich Scheichelbauer of Schriftlabor and Georg Seifert. I would like to extend my gratitude to Dave Crossland and Google Fonts for sponsoring this font family’s libre release via funding the development thereof.
