STANLEY MORISON, in his “THE ROMAN ITALIC & BLACK LETTER bequeathed to the University of Oxford by Dr. JOHN FELL” (Oxford University Press, Oxford, 1951), began this way the description of the FELL TYPES: Correctly, the Oxford Printing house possesses one of the oldest punches and matrices in England, that is not mere curiosity but is employed types cast from which are used for the formation of standard forms for books and other printed material.
This is in reality the bequest of the will of John Fell, D. D. He died on 10 July 1686 aged 61, he was Bishop of Oxford and Dean of Christ Church. All his life laid in Oxford since 1668 he aimed at establishing what he called ‘learned press’, equipped with priceless instruments, having a high approval in the future, which he left for his creation.
