Gotham is a geometric sans-serif typeface family created by the American type designer Tobias Frere-Jones and released in 2000. Gotham’s fonts were influenced by the architectural signs of the mid-20th century. Gotham has a rather blocky design with the height of letters and apertures being quite large.
Since the beginning of its creation, Gotham has been very famous because it is frequently shown in many well-known places. The examples are Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign, the branding of Michigan State University and the 2016 federal election campaign of Australian Labor Party. The font has also been used on the cornerstone of the One World Trade Center, which is a tower built on the site of the former World Trade Center in New York. Besides, it is the font currently used in MPAA title cards for film trailers in the U. S.
The style of the lettering which inspired this typeface came from the 1920s era sans-serifs like Futura where “Type, like architecture, like the organization of society itself was to be reduced to its bare efficient essentials and rid off undesired local or ethnic elements.” This theme was seen a lot in Depression-era types both in North America and Europe particularly Germany.
