Nikkei Maru is a sans-serif typeface designed to make designs stand out and appear striking, modern, and distinctive. Inspired by an image depicting ships carrying Japanese immigrants to America as well as our desire to discover more of our family’s immigration history through ancestral roots research, this font pays a salute to Japanese immigration in an artistic fashion.
Alongside intercontinental transportation, this study is also exploring the establishment and arrival of Nikkei communities residing outside Japan who then brought their descendants to reside on this new continent.
Immigration had an immense influence on various aspects of typography, such as newspapers published by Nikkei communities which served as sources for lower case letters; as well as reflecting their experiences through Dingbats.
