Malou Verlomme of Monotype Studio designed Macklin as an elongated superfamily that blends various eye-catching styles into an appealing package. A high contrast typeface, Macklin was specifically created to help brands attract emotionally-driven customers and grow sales. Comprised of four subfamilies (Sans Text, Slab Text Display & Display as well as variations), its entire superfamily comprises 54 fonts spanning hairline to black weights for easy reading.
Macklin began with research of historical records of Britain and Europe at the turn of the 18th century, in particular Vincent Figgins’ work. This period witnessed radical social transformation at the dawn of industrialization; designers and advertisers began rapidly changing traditional calligraphy models towards bold typography for advertising purposes.
Typographers experimented with new font styles, from large faces and Italians to serifs and slabs – as well as sans serifs – which designers and brands still employ today.
