Radley is inspired from lettering which were initially sketched and defined for the wood carved titling purpose. It was later on digitized and expanded to fit the web. Radley is a practical face, derived from letterforms used by hand carvers who carve letters fast, effective and beautiful. It can be applied to titles and the body text of articles, as well as to headlines and subheadings.
The fundamental forms in Radley were drawn from sketching and drawing directly on wood using the carving tools – chisels. These were scanned and traced into FontForge and cleaned up digitally and the character set was added. It seems to me that there is a certain satisfaction in carving letters into wood with such tools, and perhaps Radley has retained some of that spirit of these hand carved letters.
Since its first release in 2012, Radley was revised by Vernon Adams with the addition of an Italic and coverage of more Latin characters. He made many glyph refinements within the family following the feedback from the users. In 2017 Marc Foley took up the work that Vernon had started and made further enhancements to the family.
