Despite the disciplined geometry of Paul Renner’s sans letterforms, they were initialized with a certain degree of optical adjustment to revive the earlier typeface proportions, characterized by capitals that were once again close to old-style forms and yet retained the spirit of the New Typography. As such, the early experimental characters have been included as alternatives in his sans design, which would eventually be released as the Futura by Bauer, during 1927-30.
However, renner’s early versions embraced old style figures as the digits on some blocks show. These unusual findings were soon abandoned. The foundry Architype Renner which has developed a new four weight family has been produced from the original Renner Regular and Bold weights, created by The Foundry for the first Architype Collections in the early 1990s and is reissued due to its great popularity. It incorporates Old style figs and the test characters of early versions.
