Clarendon font is a slab serif font first produced at Thorogood and Co (formerly Thorogood and Beasley) London in 1845; also known as Fann Avenue Foundry. Clarendon design may have been developed by Robert Besley, who was employed in a foundry business. It was later cut by punchcutter Benjamin fox who is known to have given it style and design.
Clarendon’s are classical designs with rather thick and strong lines resembling “modern serif types” which were used in the 19th century for body text fonts. but even they are more massive and the contrast between the excess of the line’s weight and the degree of boldness is less.
