Some typefaces are idiosyncratic or beautiful at the cost of readability and adaptability. So it is not with the Optima® family. At the same time as being unique and belonging, there are few projects or imaging environments that fall outside this range. Even though, generally, it is used together with sans serif fonts, it is more appropriate to recognize Optima as a serifless roman.
As a Roman typeface, Optima has vast, robust letters – more so in the capital. Brand E, F and L deviate only with narrow forms. In the same way as in other Zapf designs, the cap S in Optima looks rather like it has its center of gravity above the stroke, and has a rightward tilt.
The bottom of the M is spread out and the legs of the N resemble a serif design with thin vertical lines. The lowercase a and g in Optima are the high-legibility two-storied designs that are located in the lowercase part of the alphabet. Optima can be set within the range of very narrow line spacing and can also be set within the range of very spaced out line spacing.
In fact, there is virtually no restriction to the extent that white space can be used to separate lines of text.
