Tarif is a typeface family that is derived from the concept of multicultural harmony known as Convivencia, the period of tolerance of Muslims, Christians and Jews in the tenth century Andalusia which contributed to the introduction of ancient Greek philosophy into Europe along with the Islamic culture.
It was designed for Zetafonts by Andrea Tartarelli; this is a slab serif typeface that has a humanist skeleton and an inverted contrast and the designer has tried to blend the latin zest with the calligraphic details with the extreme ink traps and the postmodern unorthodox reinvention of the traditional grotesque letter shapes.
The lively design, suitable for titling, logo and display purposes, is combined with a large range of seven weights, which makes it suitable for editorial purposes and provides good readability of the text. Italics to match have been created with the assistance of Maria Chiara Fantini and Cosimo Lorenzo Pancini.
While Rania Azmi has worked on the Arabic version of Tarif, in which humanist shapes and reversed contrast of Latin letters correspond well to the contemporary Arabic typography.
