Rolling Stone magazine was first created by Jann Wenner, an alumni from University of California at Berkeley who collaborated with Ralph Gleason (who later went on to write for The San Francisco Chronicle), with its inaugural issue published in 1967. Jann borrowed money from family and friends in order to finance his dreams of rock and roll music – using John Winston Lennon on its cover as proof.
Jann Wenner had long dreamed of starting his own music magazine. To honor this passion and fulfill it, he launched Rolling Stone Magazine with its distinctive name drawn from an English proverb: a rolling Stone gathers no moss.” This publication elevated its print edition to exceptional levels while inspiring Muddy Waters’ hit song about Bob Dylan called “Like The Rolling Stone,” while its logo was designed by Rick Griffin; famous for producing underground comic posters throughout San Francisco in the 60s.
Art nouveau sketches created by hand were then utilized without post-processing; their original form being used without alteration or post-production. Their main characteristics included curving shadows both inwards and outwards with numerous curls, smooth contours and the look of engraving; this marked the start of an extended change to the magazine glossy cover’s appearance as well as suggesting potential symbols of future significance. Subsequently prominent figures like John Pistilli, Jon Valk and Jim Parkinson later added their contributions.
