Webdings was first designed to be a TrueType dingbat font in the year 1997 and came with the Internet Explorer 4. 0 as one of the Core Fonts on the Web; later on it would be included in every version of the Microsoft Windows operating system starting from Windows 98.
New characters that are not part of the existing Unicode set was added to version 7 as webding characters. It was added to Unicode Standard in June 2014 under the current upgrade of the Unicode Standard.
